Tom Spencer
aka Tommy Koi (Beyond There) has been DJing since the
late eighties and producing Hip Hop since the beginning
of the nineties when he met up with DJ Prone and later
MC Murder One and DJ Kam to form Positive Step.
The crew hooked
up with the master of the SP1200, Huw 72 (72 Records)
then with 2 Critical to record lots of noisy Britcore
rap tracks. Luckily for the world it only remained on
tape in the studio. Tom (then known as dj Globule),
Huw and Kam decided to streamline the group and Beyond
There was born.
The first couple
of releases were on the Bomb Return of the DJ vol two
compilation and the first Deep Concentration. Since
then Tom and the crew have produced tracks with Big
Dada, T-Love, Unsung Heroes, Marble Bar records, Mr
Complex, Hombre Records, L-Roneous, Siah, Ken Boogaloo,
Bizmarkie, Andrea Parker (Mo Wax), L-Fudge, Tony Vegas,
Dave The Badger, Braintax, The Planets, Yungun, Jehst,
Tommy Evans, Binkis, Arcee and more.
Tom is also a
highly accomplished club dj having djed all over the
UK and Europe. The regular dj spots, where he cleverly
swaps between funk, easy listening, old skool breaks
and non jiggy hip hop, include the ever busy Volks Tavern
in Brighton, the Salmon and Compass in London and Spread
Love (the Social).
He has a strong
belief in playing music that isn't corny or too obvious.
Tom has DJed alongside Jurrasic Five, Andy Smith (Portishead),
the rest of Beyond There and played at the first Dedbeat
weekender in Norfolk, UK. During the day
you will find him behind the counter at the fine hip
hop vinyl emporium Mr Bongo in London and now resides
in London. Look out for his production on various releases
on Beyond There's 72 records in 2004 and a forthcoming
solo ep on Danny Breaks' Alphabet Zoo imprint. |
