Biography
From when I was about 16 I used to
frequent indie festivals and watch my favourite bands play.
At one of the V festivals I poked my head into a tent
where Joey Negro was playing and I was taken away by the buzz
that filled the place. People were dancing, laughing, feeding
off the DJ and in turn the DJ was feeding off the crowd. The
funky music made people dance and the music itself created
a really happy atmosphere. That inspired me to start listening
to house music.
I started going to Pams House and went to a couple of Bed
events at Gratecrasher before deciding I wanted to have a
go Djing, so I purchased some decks at the age of 18. I was
told by friends with the 'know-how' that I had a lot of catching
up to do. This 'catching up' started when I moved to Nottingham
to study. With so many gaps between lectures I filled them
with mixing. I returned from my studies with not only my qualifications
but with the technical ability to scratch and more importantly
beat match.
Nottingham was definately important to my djing development,
but I returned I discovered that what I was missing was a
crowd.
A person who had experience in front of crowds was my friend
Alex Jay, who had been playing for Funkatarium in London for
a couple of years. After
mixing for the first time in front of a crowd at his event
at the Rhythm Factory early 2004, myself and Alex formed a
duo called 2:fACEd. We decided
that we were going to do something different and we started
performing as a three deck, two mixer duo. We would layer
scratching and accapellas over mixing as well as using samples
and it sounded cool.
My first big break came at Soulshaker's DJ competition in
May 2004 at Mustard Lounge. We won the competition and gained
residency for Soulshaker playing at Poonana's and Surrey Tavern.
But things were not quite gelling
with 2:fACEd. We never got the opportunity to practice which
I thought was a very important part of doing what we did,
and Alex Jay was getting more influenced by edgy house music.
My inspirations are good vocal hooks and funky baselines which
in turn provide a happy, funky environment and I don't think
edgy house purveys a happy environment, besides the crowds
loved the tunes we were playing. So why change?
So I didn't. Through musical differences 2:fACEd were no more
and I begun playing solely as Kaz Fresh. I kept my residency
at Soulshaker and began playing around East Anglia at various
venues, whilst being invited back to play for nights that
the venues themselves were hosting. I really love playing
on my own and having the whole influence on the dancefloor.
I love building sets to gradually lift the mood on the dancefloor
before hitting the crowd with arrays of awesome tunes at peak
hours. I love it during and after sets when people want to
shake your hand. It's just verything to me to know that I
am giving the people the tunes to make their night the best
it can be.
At the moment I am headlining for the Groove Establishment
hosted at a number of different nights around East Anglia
and totally loving the
atmosphere and following the night brings. I am also producing
tunes (early stages at present) and hope that the progress
I am making now can develop into releases in the not too distant
future.
Keep the dancefloors funky and the crowd will follow.......
